Market Demand for Dalian Castings
As a key Northeast Asian equipment manufacturing hub and core marine economic city, Dalian’s casting demand is closely linked to pillar industries, showing steady growth with structural divergence. Driven by upgrades in shipbuilding, offshore engineering, heavy machinery and new energy, demand now prioritizes precision, specialized materials and customization instead of sheer output volume.
Ship and offshore engineering dominates local casting demand at nearly 40%. Supported by major shipyards including Dalian Shipbuilding Industry and CSSC Dalian, demand remains solid for large crankshafts, rudder precision castings, anchor chains and mooring components. Surging orders for LNG carriers and FPSOs over recent three years require castings with low-temperature corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength, boosting customized product uptake. Data from Dalian Foundry Association records a 12% year-on-year demand rise for marine castings in 2023, outpacing conventional bulk carrier casting growth.
Heavy machinery and wind power act as fast-growing new drivers. Dalian Huarui Heavy Industry maintains steady orders for crane and hydraulic castings. Booming offshore wind projects amid carbon neutrality goals lifted demand for large steel castings such as wind hubs, bearing housings and bases by 18% year-on-year in 2023. Castings over 100 tons for 10MW+ turbines account for 35% of this segment, requiring superior material uniformity and strict non-destructive testing, pushing local foundries to upgrade production capacity.
Automotive and new energy supply chains see clear lightweight shifts and split demand. Host facilities including FAW-Volkswagen Dalian plant and BYD supporting park face shrinking orders for cast iron engine blocks and gearbox housings for fuel vehicles. Meanwhile, demand for aluminum alloy castings for new energy motor housings and battery trays rises 20% annually. Several local foundries supply lightweight parts to BYD, yet local supply capacity remains insufficient; high-precision aluminum castings are largely sourced from Shandong and Jiangsu.
Structural imbalance persists in Dalian’s casting market. Low-end standard castings suffer shrinking demand amid overcapacity and rising environmental costs, while customized eco-smart castings face supply shortages. Low-emission castings via lost foam and investment casting made up 42% of total demand in 2023, up 17 percentage points from 2020, as environmental regulations accelerate green transformation.
Overall, casting demand advances alongside industrial upgrading. Stable upgraded marine demand pairs with rapid expansion in new energy and heavy equipment. Lightweight and eco-friendly production stand as core trends. Going forward, Dalian’s marine city strategy and equipment manufacturing upgrades will unlock further demand potential, driving consolidation and technological upgrades of local foundries to close supply gaps and build sound industrial-market synergy.
