Notes on Procuring Dalian Marine Components

Date of issue:2026-08-18 00:00 Source:http://www.wanderui.com Click:

The procurement of marine components directly bears on vessel navigation safety, maritime compliance and operational stability. Operating persistently in a marine environment featuring heavy salt spray, intense vibration and extreme temperature variations, vessels must comply with mandatory requirements under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and standards set by classification societies worldwide (including CCS of China, ABS of the United States and LR of the United Kingdom). The core considerations for procurement are outlined below:

First, strictly enforce regulatory and certification compliance. Marine components differ from ordinary industrial products and shall hold product approval certificates issued by relevant classification societies (e.g., CCS Type Approval Certificates for Marine Products). Critical components such as lifeboat fittings, navigation radars, main engine crankshafts and steering gear valves shall also satisfy special requirements under relevant IMO annexes. During procurement, verify certificate categories, validity periods and consistency between applicable models and batches. The use of uncertified, expired or fraudulently certificated products is prohibited. An ocean-going bulk carrier was once detained during port state control at an international port due to uncertified CCS fire pump valves, incurring nearly one million yuan in demurrage losses as well as maritime administrative penalties.

Second, guarantee quality and performance adapted to marine environments. Marine components must feature corrosion resistance, vibration resistance and anti-ageing properties. Metal structural parts shall adopt galvanized, chromium-plated or Grade 316 stainless steel materials to resist salt spray corrosion. Rubber seals and plastic insulation parts shall be made of special ozone-resistant and oil-resistant industrial materials to prevent cabin leakage or electrical short circuits. Electrical components shall meet IP56 or higher ingress protection standards to withstand high humidity and salinity on decks and in engine rooms. In addition, strict matching with vessel models is required. Main engine parts shall correspond to specific brands (such as MAN B&W and Wärtsilä) and parameter specifications. Improper substitution or mismatching may trigger power system failures and endanger vessel safety.

Third, select qualified and formal suppliers. Priority shall be given to established enterprises with marine product manufacturing permits and extensive experience in maritime supporting supplies, rather than unlicensed workshops or resellers. Assess suppliers’ production capacity, reputation and service capability. Critical spare parts for ocean-going vessels require emergency supply responsiveness. Imported core components shall be sourced via official authorized agents to avoid counterfeits. In 2022, the Nanhai Maritime Bureau seized more than 100 counterfeit marine fuel injectors whose steel strength reached merely 60% of genuine parts, having caused three main engine scuffing accidents.

Fourth, standardize procurement procedures and acceptance control. Include technical specifications, certification standards, material parameters and third-party inspection rules in procurement contracts. Conduct on-site inspection upon delivery: cross-check consistency of product models, batch numbers and certificates, and inspect for defects such as dents and rust. Random sampling testing at classification society laboratories is required for critical components, and non-conforming products shall be rejected outright.

Fifth, implement rational spare parts inventory planning. Plan spare parts categories alongside procurement, and determine stock levels according to vessel navigation areas (ocean-going / coastal) and route conditions (tropical / frigid zones. Consumables including fuel filters, sealing gaskets and navigation lights shall be stocked based on sailing cycles. Major assemblies such as main engine crankshafts and steering gear units shall be provisioned appropriately according to vessel tonnage to avoid vessel downtime caused by supply chain disruptions.

In summary, marine component procurement constitutes a core link for safe vessel operation. Full-chain management covering compliance, quality, suppliers, workflows and inventory is essential to mitigate safety risks and ensure maritime compliance and operational efficiency.
